Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav has said that his party, if it comes to power, will do away with the provision of death penalty for rapists.
Speaking at a public meeeting in Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh, Yadav said, "Boys make mistakes. They should not hang for this. We will revoke the anti-rape laws."(Ladkon se galti ho jaati hai, per un galtiyon ki sazaa faansi nahi honi chahiye

Putting forward his own expanantion for a spurt in rape cases among youngsters, the SP supremo said, "Boys and girls befriend each other. When they fall out, a rape complaint is lodged. We will change this law and will make a provision for penalising people who misuse the law by filing frivolous complaints."

Yadav's comment drew strong reactions on the social networking sites. However, social activist Medha Patkar jumped to Yadav's favour, saying while she condemned the heinous crime, she does not support the provision of death penalty for rapists.

"Rape isn't a small mistake, cant be forgiven. But I am against death penalty too," she was quoted by ANI as saying.

Netaji may be saying it in another sense but it shouldn't be like this. Hope he will improve this talk. This is a sensitive period, so every bad strategy will lead to decrease in votes.
